This large vase was made from a white stoneware clay on my potter's wheel. It is decorated with a black slip applied with sponging on the body and brushing on the handles. The technique used gives the look of stone or marble and is left unglazed to highlight a natural finish. The glossy clear glaze applied to the handles frames the matte look, providing a balance of both surface treatments.
