This vase was made on my potter's wheel using a dark brown stoneware clay. I find this clay often offers a dramatic feel and frequently I use brighter slips or glazes to show other sides of its personality. Such is the case with this piece.
Orange, yellow, blue and slips were used to cover the surface in horizontal bands around the pot. Next, I carved repeating motifs - geometric along with loser, more free flowing designs - to add expression and balance.
The finished vase resulted in an earthy and even tribal quality, but its symbolism and meaning are totally in the eyes of the beholder.
